In 1973 Charlie Thomas competed in track and field at Pensacola Junior College in Florida and James Manuel a migrant laborer was picking up to 200 bushels of apples a day at local orchards. In 1982 Julie Burke performed with Virginia's Young Dominions at the 4-H Congress and the local boy scout troop attended summer camp in Gore.
