Article published in the Civil War Times in 1999 detailing the June 1862 attack by some Union soldiers on a widowed Mrs. Swindler and her slave Polly. The Swindler home was around four miles from Sperryville VA. The article also describes the trial of these soldiers for their crimes. The soldiers ransacked and stole items in the home and outbuildings and raped a slave name Polly Walker. Mrs. Walker may have been married to Griffen Walker. In the late black marriage records there is a record for Polly Johnson married to Griffen Walker. Her parents were David and Leanda Johnson and his were Press and Fanny Walker.
