Hazel River Project Hopeless From the Start

Identifier: 2018.1.529
Description:
In 1850 the Hazel River Navigation Company was incorporated, but by 1857, the project had been abandoned. Hundreds of laborers were brought in for the entire length of the planned canal, with many of them coming from Ireland. A flood in 1852 changed the river bed and by then the Thompsonville (Castleton) section had cost $16,679.85. The coming of rail travel made this means of transportation obsolete.
