Rappahannock Connections of Dr. James Hamilton. Dr. Hamilton was a relative of a free black man, James Lawson who lived on the farm on which Kitty Payne and her children lived. Mrs. Payne and her children were freed by Mary Maddox on the death of her husband, Samuel Maddox. The family were forcibly brought back to Virginia by Mary Maddox's nephew who claimed that the Payne family legally belonged to him.
