Description: Newspaper listing of all 146 women who had paid the poll tax and were eligible to vote in Rappahannock County. 17 African-American women joined this brave assemblage. This clipping is probably from the 1920s, as women voting was considered newsworthy. Women received the right to vote in 1919, but the law was not ratified by the states until 1920. Virginia did not ratify the law until 1952, but women had been voting here since the 1920s.
